LAB TESTING MEDICAL MARIJUANA - TOXIC CHEMICALS AND MICROBES - PART 3

Lab testing of cannabis for toxins, pesticides, mold, fungus..

What should Medical Marijuana Growers Test For? - or - How can I Assure that MY Medical Marijuana is perfectly Safe?

The basic objective of testing is to prove that the Herbal medicine in question - is both medically potent and toxin free.  Essential medicinal ingredients that should be quantified are the Cannabinoids THC and CBD.   Potentially harmful things to test definitely include Pesticides, Mold, Bacteria, and Mycotoxins (toxic microbe shit).

Pesticide Analysis

“Some of the stuff we find on samples, it’s disgusting,” he said. “People need to know. The stuff that’s killing your lungs — it has a lot of pesticides and chemicals on there that will do you more harm than good.”

Smoking Cannabis with pesticide residue is a health hazard.  Contaminants that are inhaled go straight into the bloodstream.  While regulations are in place for pesticides and herbicides for foodstuff, this is not often the case with pesticides.  In California, many countries are enacting testing regulations to ensure that clean, quality pot is sold in local dispensaries.

"My colleagues and I at The Denver Post and The Cannabist commissioned independent tests on marijuana concentrates, and the results — which showed high levels of banned pesticides in one popular brand, Mahatma — spurred a Denver Department of Environmental Health investigation that recalled Mahatma products, and now many others."  -  RICARDO BACA

Pesticide Residues in Marijuana - Sample Test Data

Pesticide Residues Found in Marijuana - Lab Results

BUSTED - Banned Pesticides Found in US Cannabis in 2015

  • Myclobutanil Fungicide associated with nervous system issues
  • Imidacloprid: Insecticide, moderately hazardous - WHO
  • Abamectin Insecticide, bad actor, reproductive toxicity  harmful if inhaled
  • Etoxazole Insecticide, reproductive toxicity
  • Spiromesifen Insecticide, implicated in respiratory illness

“From the grower’s perspective, this was a popular Cannabis product and everybody was talking about it and praising it because it was natural and was working really well.  And lo and behold, it had this insecticide inside it that nobody knew about it.”  -  Alison Ledden, Director of Marketing at The Farm

See the Appendix below for a complete list of Pesticides Banned for use in the cultivation of Marijuana for Medical or Recreational use.

MICROBIOLOGICAL SCREENING

Patients with serious health conditions, such as immune disorders cannot afford to be breathing in spores and toxins.  Organic contaminants  from microorganisms can be a serious issue.  Do a smell test. If your pot smells moldy, bring it back to the supplier.  Yes both man and nature can sabotage your medicine.  In our opinion, Medical Marijuana should be screened for mold, certain bacteria, mycotoxins (fungus metabolites), and fungus.

Mold in Cannabis - Lab Test

Mold issues in marijuana are almost always due to moisture lock. If marijuana is packaged or cured in air-tight containers while buds are moist , this creates the ideal environment to incubate, or cultivate mold and microbes.  In an example of bad manufacturing practices, a double rig-off, some growers (like supermarkets) add moisture to artificially increase profits. while sometimes degrading the product.

Residual Solvent Analysis

Solvents are used to pull out the active ingredients from the Cannabis Plant including: oils, cannabinoids (THC, CBD), Terpenes and other components.  Solvents commonly used are:

Lesser to no Toxicity

  • Butane
  • Ether
  • Isopropanol
  • Ethanol
  • Acetone
  • Pentane
  • Hexanes
  • n-Heptane
  • Naphtha\

Solvents to Avoid Like the Plague

  • Benzene.
  • diChloromethane
  • Chloroform
  • Carbon tetrachloride.
  • Methanol
  • Nitromethane

Residual solvents can remain in cannabis concentrates and extracts:. Because of the harmful nature of some solvents used, it's important that they be tested - for the benefit of Manufacturers and Consumers alike.  Manufacturers can potentially lose their business if they are caught selling toxic product.

Lab Certification - ISO

You want an ISO certified lab to competently validate your Marijuana products.   ISO stands for International Organization for Standardization for testing worldwide. . ISO 17025 standard section sets the rules for preparation, testing, quality control and reporting among other issues.

“If someone has a $20,000 crop that mildews, they’ll do what they have to to get it to market.” - Jim Roe, the scientific director of Steep Hill Laboratory

“They don’t come right out and say it, but essentially that’s what they’re asking — if they bring something in, can we guarantee they’re going to pass. Those customers are likely to find other labs willing to either fake results or print a passing report without doing any testing at all.” -  Swantek

“All of these fake labs, it’s really doing a disservice to the growers. The growers do really want to learn to apply pesticides correctly and have a safe product. Without knowing actual accredited results, it’s hard for them to learn that.” - Swantek of the Oregon Environmental Laboratory Accreditation

“It’s inevitable, as the industry becomes more heavily regulated, testing has to become part of the equation, each state that wants to get this right is trying to build on the successive experiences of those that preceded it.” - Kris Krane

Appendix:

List of Pesticides approved for Marijuana Cultivation.  Growers should test obviously tor the pesticide they use.  Into the future, growers in California will have to test for Pesticides and operations that fail to produce chemical free pot, will go the way of the dinosaur.  The negative press, fines and lawsuits will put them under.
