In you like THC, you're probably going to love THC-V

Many weed veterans greatly overestimate their knowledge.  Too many effectively know next to nothing about the many types cannabinoids that exist in the cannabis plant or what they do.  What we're sayin, is hey dude, there is a lot more to marijuana than getting blazed.  Even if you're just focused on getting high, other cannabinoids can enhance your enjoyment.  Furthermore, many people that want to feel good are quite often treating an underlying condition, like anxiety or stress.

While "everybody knows "  that THC is the psychoactive component and major ingredient of most recreational and medical cannabis varieties, not everybody knows that another type of THC is making waves - THC-V or tetrahydrocannabivari.  If you asked a genie for the perfect medicine for evening time - a night of blissful painless sleep, genie might conjure you up some THC.  If you asked for something for the day use, with calm, cool and inspired energy, then genie  would be serving up THC-V.

"What do you think of when you see a guy guzzling glasses of fine wine.  He's and idiot.  What do you think of the guy wasted on THC dabs, when he could have had a better, more intelligent experience smoking a good balanced cannabis preparation, matched for the occasion."

THC-V in many respects is the the polar opposite to the common THC.   THC-V is psychoactive too, but it is more energising and suppresses appetite, which is obviously not a good thing for AIDS patients, but a godsend to people that have a hard time sticking to their diets.

  • THC-V is psychoactive with the euphoric high of THC, half in duration

  • THC-V is energetic with a clear-headed, stimulating buzz

  • THC-V is an appetite suppressant with applications in weight loss, but obviously not anorexia

  • THC-V appears to help diabetes, regulating blood sugar levels, reduces insulin resistance

  • THC-V reduces panic attacks, good for PTSD patients without suppressing emotion

  • THC-V is finding application in Alzheimer’s, reduced tremors, motor control, and brain lesions

  • THC-V stimulates bone growth, promotes the growth of new bone cells, with potential treatment for osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions

"Given its anti-oxidant qualities and its ability to activate CB2 but to block CB1 receptors, Δ9-THC-V has a promising pharmacological profile for delaying disease progression and also for mitigating Parkinsonian symptoms." - Clinical Study

Have you ever smoked weed and lost your appetite? Or have you even smoked weed to stave off hunger?  While getting high on regular marijuana strains like Blue Dream gives you the munchies, THC-V actually suppresses appetite It is quick-acting, but lasts about half as long as normal THC, which is easily rectified vaping once again.  Edibles high in THC-V are kind of interestng, once you ingest the brownie, cookie or what have you, the effects will last 4 or so hours which means you can be "done" within the evening, whereas the stone from overconsuming traditional pot brownies goes on and on, from evening into the next morning...

While THC-V is somewhat rare in the original North US varieties, it's there in small quantities.  As the researchers gather data from varieties round the globe, it turns out that some South African and Himalayan varieties contain appreciable quantities of THC-V.

"African Sativa varieties, particularly landrace varieties. Durban Poison, Cherry Pie, Doug’s Varin, Pineapple Purps, Power Plant, Jack The Ripper and Durban Cheese are varieties with higher THC-V."

But there's progress.  A generous portion of the population has become aware of CBD, the non-psychoactive, but highly medicinal component found in therapeutic quantity in some specially bred varieties.  Another Cannabinoid, THC-V is definitely psychoactive, but it's overall qualities are pretty much the opposite to THC.

"High-THC-V Strains Are a New Kind of Euphoric."

Although THC-V does affect the same receptors in the brain as THC, it produces a much different high. THC-V is psychoactive, but causes more of a psychedelic, clear-headed effect. It causes the effects of THC to hit you much faster, and some think it could be the reason for those “1 hitter quitter” varieties. With that said, the THC effects also die off a bit more quickly in the presence of THC-V.

A search for varieties high in THC-V at your local collective would certainly be rewarded. Some of the most beloved Sativas in the world are high in THC-V. It is most prominent in African landraces, like Durban Poison, and the haze varieties. Some breeders have started to focus on the production of more high-THC-V varieties, and more like TGA Genetics‘ Jack The Ripper would be a great addition.

MMJDoctorOnline Notes:  In Nevada and California, until 2018, the only way to buy cannabis is with a licensed doctor's recommendation to treat medical conditions and symptoms.  The online process is simple and takes only a few minutes.  After the applicant clicks send 420 evaluation, shortly thereafter a doctor reviews your file.  There is no payment required until a patients is approved for their 420 recommendation, Cannabis ID Card, or Cultivation permit.  Documents are used to purchase cannabis based medicines at cannabis clinics, compassion clubs, cannabis dispensaries, cooperatives and other access points.

Gas Chromatogram (above) is a testing method for cannabinoids.  The earlier the time the lower the  boiling point of the cannabinoid.  Note CBDV and THC-V's lower boiling points due to having two less carbons each as compared to THC and CBD proper.

How to Customize Your Cannabis High With Temperature on the Vape.  The heat settings can control somewhat the concentration of light or heavier components - which correspond basically to lower or higher boiling points.  For example, if you Vape at low temperatures (refer to the above chromatogram), then more of the CBDV, THCV, CBC and CBD will be delivered - assuming these components are present in your cannabis product or strain.  A high setting will vaporize everything, from CBDV to CBD, including THC (see chromatogram above).

Note that THC, CBD and THCV all exist mostly as cannabinoid acids in the raw plant - and are denoted THCA, CBDA and THCVA respectively.  This is why consuming raw marjuana (usually consumed in juice form) is not psychoactive.  The properties of the cannabinoid acids are not properly studied at this time due to their mild and discrete activity, while the focus has been the blatently active heated forms.  This is why people smoke cannabis, eat baked edibles and Vape it.  With that said, it is high time that non-acidic, el-natural cannabinoids be tested in clinical settings, especially for Crohn's Disease, Epilepsy, Cancer and Auto-immune disorders.

"Everyone should try non-psychoctive raw cannabis or even hemp (make sure it's organic).

Search Google, Weed Maps, Yelp for Doug's Varin, Pineapple Purps , Durban Poison

Willie Nelson , Red Congolese Jack the Ripper , Durban Cheese, Cherry Pie, Skunk No.  After you find a strain of interest, check out the chain of custody, a certificate of analysis for THC, CBD and THCV among other components.  If they don't have the test results for THC-V, don't buy the product.

This list is by no means comprehensive, but it includes varieties best known for their tendency toward higher-than-average THC-V contents. These varieties can be consumed in flower form or they can be processed into extracts, oils, and edibles for a higher concentration of cannabinoids. A few of the varieties below, like Doug’s Varin and Pineapple Purps, were specially bred to contain higher levels of THC-V. Again, be sure to steer your choices toward African sativas as they tend to contain the most THC-V.

  • Doug's Varin sativa  V=5-8%

  • Pineapple Purps sativa  V=3-5%

  • Durban Poison sativa  V=1-3%

  • Willie Nelson sativa  V=1-?%

  • Red Congolese sativa  V=1-2%

  • Jack the Ripper sativa  V=1-2%

  • Durban Cheese hybrid  V=1-2%

  • Skunk No. 1 hybrid  V=1%

  • Tangie - trace V

  • Girl Scout Cookies - trace V

The US Journal of Botany analyzed 157 cannabis samples from all over the world - sativa, indica and ditchweed for THC-V.  The highest V readings were found plants from Southern Africa and Afghanistan. South African Durban Poison  and Jack the Ripper were the most common varieties with high THC-V, with Dutch Treat and Skunk #1 also recording a significant amount.  Hybrids of the said strains are likely to have elevated THCV readings too.

The Tangie variety has trace THCV at 0.4%, and it is a cross between Cali Orange and Skunk hybrid.  Pie Face OG, with the genetics of Cherry Pie x “Face Off” OG Kush, has about 0.5 % THC-V.  Cherry Pie genetics are  Granddaddy Purple x Durban Poison and  Girl Scout Cookies Durban Poison genetics, which account for trace V levels. Hawaiian-Dutch has almost 0.5 % THC-V, probably due to its Dutch lineage.

“My absolute favorite strain is Tangie - whenever I find it, I buy it in bulk. Very creative high and very expansive in the sense that many ideas will come at once, but it won't overwhelm. This is a great flower for a day off of work, or a weekend splurge; it won't give the muchies so severely that one must eat after every toke, but it also doesn't keep one from wanting to eat, like some of the heavier Indicas.  Very cool, zen-like head space. Starting to feel motivated and creative....  ” - Leafly CapCash9

Ace of Spades Shatter by Category 5 Research, with genetics; Jack the Ripper x Black Cherry Soda tested 2.4% THC-V.  Agent Orange Nug Run Shatter (Agent Orange x Jack the Ripper) by A Greener had almost 2% THC-V.

All About THC-V

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (also known as THC-V) is well on its way to becoming one of the next well-known cannabinoids. Similar to THC in molecular structure and psychoactive impact, THC-V has very pronounced and different effects.  The cannabinoid intensifies the euphoric high created by THC but lasts about half as long. The high it creates is a clear-headed buzz. It also works as an appetite suppressant. This means it might hold promise eventually as part of a weight loss drug.

Medically, THC-V may help with the management of diabetes . Research studies demonstrate much promise in terms of THC-V’s ability to regulate serum sugar levels. THC-V also appears to reduce insulin resistance. The cannabinoid also appears to curb PTSD panic attacks, help control Alzheimer-related tremors and to stimulate the growth of new bone cells.

Use of tetrahydrocannabivarin as neutral-antagonist of theCB1 cannabinoid receptor

The invention relates to the use of one or more cannabinoids in the manufacture of medicaments for use in the treatment of diseases and conditions benefiting from neutral antagonism of the CB1 cannabinoid receptor. Preferably the cannabinoid is THC-V.   Preferably the diseases and conditions to be treated are taken from the group: obesity, schizophrenia, epilepsy, cognitive disorders such as bone disorders, bulimia, Alzheimer's, obesity associated with type II diabetes (non-insulin dependant diabetes) and in the treatment of drug abuse, alcohol and nicotine abuse or dependency.

Potential of the Phyto-cannabinoids,CBDV and Δ9 THCV, to Produce CB-1 receptor Inverse-agonism Nausea Symptoms in Rodents

PURPOSE:  Is it toxic? Here, we evaluated two phytocannabinoids, cannabidivarin CBDV and Δ9 -THC THC-V, for their ability to produce these behavioural effect characteristics of CB1 receptor inverse agonism in rodents. The cannabinoid CB1 receptor inverse agonists vs antagonists, rimonabant SR-141716, SR & AM-251, produce nausea and potentiate toxin-induced nausea by inverse agonism (rather than antagonism) of the CB1 receptor.

IMPLICATIONS: It is not toxic. The pattern of findings indicates that neither THC-V nor CBDV produced a behavioural profile characteristic of CB1 receptor inverse agonists. As well, these compounds demonstrate potential in reducing nausea.

Symptom-relieving and Neuroprotective effects of the Phytocannabinoid Δ?-THC-V in Animal Models of Parkinson's Disease.

BACKGROUND - Previous studies have indicated that a cannabinoid, such as Δ9-THC-V, has antioxidant properties and an ability to activate cellular membrane CB2 receptors, but also to block CB1 receptors , which might a promising therapy for alleviating symptoms and delaying neuro-degeneration as seen in conditions like Parkinson's disease.
APPROACH - The ability of Δ9-THC-V to mitigate motor-inhibition and act as a neuroprotectant was investigated in rodents lesioned from 6-hydroxydopamine and in mice lesioned from lipopolysaccharide.

CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS - Given its anti-oxidant qualities and its ability to activate CB2 but to block CB1 receptors, Δ9-THC-V has a promising pharmacological profile for delaying disease progression and also for mitigating Parkinsonian symptoms.
